This morning we have a major food startup VC funding round from Qatar, a feature on alternative proteins and what they could mean for MENA, and another warning that morning cup of Joe is at risk. We break them all down in the news well, below.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-07\"><\/a> <strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY in our corner of the world- <\/strong>Countries along the Red Sea coast are facing what Canada\u2019s CBC says would be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/world\/un-fso-safer-salvage-funding-1.6590074\">a \u201ccatastrophic\u201d oil spill<\/a> if United Nations members don\u2019t quickly transfer several mn USD the organization needs to kickstart a salvage operation. <strong>Failure to pay up could mean we will need to take on a >USD 20 bn cleanup operation <\/strong>\u2014 and face big problems for everything from marine navigation to the tourism industry (to say nothing of the sea- and wild-life who call coastal areas home).<\/p>\n<p><strong>The problem: A decrepit oil tanker named the FSO Safer that Yemen\u2019s government had <\/strong><strong>been using to store oil<\/strong>, but that is now about to break up. The UN is seeking USD 75 mn in funding to get phase one of the project off the ground \u2014 but too many of the countries and institutions that have pledged to kick in haven\u2019t made good.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ALSO IN THE REGION- <\/strong><strong>Oman continues to rev up its hydrogen plans and is now <\/strong><strong>exploring converting its natgas pipeline to move hydrogen. <\/strong>The owner and operator of Oman\u2019s gas pipeline, state-owned OQ Gas Networks, has started running tests to assess the network\u2019s readiness to transport blue or green hydrogen within the country, managing director Mansoor Al Abdali announced recently. We have more in this morning\u2019s hydrogen story, below.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY outside the region- There is no single big climate story dominating the international press today<\/strong>, but here are a few interesting highlights:<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-06\"><\/a> <strong>#1- Denmark just became the first rich nation to pledge loss + damage funds to countries in <\/strong><strong>the <\/strong><strong>g<\/strong><strong>lobal south \u2014 but is it enough? <\/strong>Denmark has earmarked DKK 100 mn (USD 13.3 mn) in loss and damage aid to countries most impacted by climate change, with a focus on Africa\u2019s Sahel region, it said in <a href=\"https:\/\/via.ritzau.dk\/pressemeddelelse\/danmark-giver-100-mio-kr-til-klimatilpasning-og-klimaskabte-tab-og-skader-for-verdens-fattigste?publisherId=2012662&releaseId=13660016\">a statement<\/a>. The move marks the first time a developed nation has offered compensation for the impact of emissions on poorer countries, but activists say the sum pales in comparison to the real price tag of the damage sustained by developing countries. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/denmark-becomes-first-offer-loss-damage-climate-funding-2022-09-20\/\">Reuters<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/green\/2022\/09\/21\/denmark-becomes-first-country-to-pay-for-loss-and-damage-from-climate-change#:~:text=Denmark%20has%20just%20promised%20100,vulnerable%20regions%20of%20the%20world.\">Euronews<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/climate-environment\/2022\/09\/20\/denmark-climate-change-un-general-assembly\/\">Washington Post<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-04\"><\/a> <strong>#2- The pace of decarbonization in G20 countries reached its lowest level in 20 <\/strong><strong>years in 2021<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/g20-economies-slow-pace-decarbonisation-pwc-study-shows-2022-09-20\/\">Reuters<\/a> cites a PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) study as saying. The countries are falling short of reaching the 1.5\u00b0C cap set forth in the Paris Agreement due to rising energy costs and covid. Globally, decarbonization fell to 0.5%, far below the 12.9% target required, but in the G20 it only fell to 0.2%. Decarbonization needs to reach 15.2% a year in the aftermath of the slowdown to cap global warming at 1.5\u00b0C.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who did well? <\/strong>\u201cSouth Africa was the strongest performer, with a decrease of 4.6%, followed by Australia at 3.3% and China at 2.8%,\u201d Reuters wrote.<\/p>\n<p><strong>#3- Former US vice president Al Gore is calling the World Bank president a <\/strong><strong>\u201cclimate denier,\u201d<\/strong> urging US president Joe Biden to remove him from his post, several news outlets wrote. Al Gore argues that the bank was providing capital to fossil fuel companies operating in developing countries. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/independentpremium\/world\/world-bank-president-climate-denier-al-gore-b2172240.html\">The Independent<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-09-20\/gore-calls-for-ouster-of-world-bank-leaders-on-climate-concerns?sref=mmeFTDW1\">Bloomberg<\/a>)<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-09\"><\/a> <strong>SIGN OF THE TIMES- No money for gas projects, says EIB:<\/strong> The European Investment Bank (EIB) said it will not invest in any gas projects despite calls by most African nations to recategorize gas for investments, EIB President Werner Hoyer told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/b00ea2e5-78a0-46c5-b2b0-33e6a40b96af\">FT<\/a> in an interview. \u201cWe as a European public institution should not invest in assets that one day will be seen as stranded assets,\u201d he said. The EU\u2019s lending arm should take \u201cthe energy transition seriously and move to renewables, Hoyer said, risking a clash with African nations at COP27 who are asserting their right to continue investing in oil and gas. African and developing nations argue that the move is key to their development even as some wealthier nations step up calls to phase out fossil fuels.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Major Wall Street banks are threatening to ditch Mark Carney\u2019s green alliance: <\/strong>JPMorgan, Morgan Stanley and Bank of America are among those who could pull out of the former Bank of England governor\u2019s Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero (GFANZ) due to what they say are legal risks associated with meeting strict decarbonization rules, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/0affebaa-c62a-49d1-9b44-b9d27f0b5600\">Financial Times<\/a> reports, citing top execs. \u201cI am close to taking us out of these global green commitments,\u201d one senior exec said. \u201cI\u2019m not going to allow third parties to create legal liabilities for us and our shareholders. It is immoral and irresponsible.\u201d GFANZ seeks to tackle climate change from within the financial system by getting members to decarbonize their combined USD 130 tn in assets.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The world needs annual investments of c. USD 1 tn in renewable energy and up to USD <\/strong><strong>130 bn for hydrogen by 2030<\/strong> to avoid the crippling repercussions of climate change, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/c00f8231-0cc9-4d34-bd0d-49b493fcffb5\">FT<\/a> reported, citing a report by the International Energy Agency, the International Renewable Energy Agency and the UN ahead of COP27. The world now needs to add four times the size of renewable energy added in 2021 every year by 2030, the report showed. Last year, it was estimated that the world would need 3 TW of renewables capacity by 2030 \u2014 a data point the report upped to 8 TW. In a pre-recorded speech, the president said that the repercussions of climate change are worsening by the day as temperatures soar globally, noting the recent devastating floods in Pakistan and the forest fires in Europe over the summer. El Sisi reiterated his call for the international community to meet the pledge to provide USD 100 bn in funding every year to help developing countries mitigate and adapt to the effects of climate change.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What does the Biden administration want to get out <\/strong><strong>of COP27? A strengthened position <\/strong><strong>in MENA could be one priority area. <\/strong>The Biden administration is likely to use COP27 as a chance to strengthen its position in our corner of the world \u2014 in part through its joint hosting with Egypt of the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/eg.usembassy.gov\/u-s-egypt-joint-press-release-on-climate-change\/\">Adaptation in Africa<\/a>\u201d event aimed at boosting climate change adaptation throughout the continent, UN climate change negotiator Ken Markowitz told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energymonitor.ai\/policy\/international-treaties\/cop27-manage-your-expectations\">Energy Monitor<\/a> yesterday.<\/p>\n<p><strong>More cooperation with China could be another: <\/strong>Biden will also be looking to mend some fences with China and find common ground on climate-related issues, Markowitz predicts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And pushing partners to up their climate ambition is a possible third: <\/strong>\u201cWith the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), the US enters this COP in its strongest negotiation position in years and it will use that as leverage to motivate its strategic partners to increase their climate ambition,\u201d Markowitz added. The USD 369 bn IRA (<a href=\"https:\/\/s3.documentcloud.org\/documents\/22128148\/inflation_reduction_act_of_2022.pdf\">pdf<\/a>) was signed into effect by Biden in August and is considered the largest climate investment bill in US history.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Need a refresher on Biden\u2019s landmark climate bill?<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/3907e1bd-299f-46ad-8f42-7d0fead9dcc7\">We\u2019ve got you covered<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>CLIMATE DIPLOMACY- <\/strong><strong>Egypt is advancing its climate agenda and more at the <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3xGGiA6\">UNGA<\/a><\/strong>: Egypt\u2019s Foreign Affairs Minister Sameh Shoukry held climate talks with the foreign ministers of <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3qXfGa6\">France<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3R748eZ\">Portugal<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3S4oeId\">Netherlands<\/a>, as well as the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3Bzuil9\">US Special Envoy for Yemen<\/a>on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly G77 High-Level week. Outside of discussions in national security and diplomacy, conversations focused on investments in Egypt\u2019s green transformation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Investments in green technologies in Egypt <\/strong>were on the agenda at a meeting between the COP27 President Designate and the US <a href=\"https:\/\/bciu.org\/\">Business Council for International Understanding (BCIU)<\/a>, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3R0Gwsw\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Egypt and UN Sec-Gen Antonio Guterres hosted a <\/strong><strong>closed <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/climatechange\/informal-climate-leaders-roundtable-climate-action-2022\">Leaders\u2019 Roundtable<\/a><\/strong><strong> on Tuesday. <\/strong>The informal meeting addressed ensuring COP27 outcomes are met, as well as the pressing need to confront weather events that result in great human and material losses and damages, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3qYk5tm\">statement<\/a>. operator of Oman\u2019s gas pipeline system, state-owned <a href=\"https:\/\/oq.com\/en\/about-oq\/company\">OQ Gas Networks<\/a>, has begun tests to assess the network\u2019s readiness to transport hydrogen across the country, Managing Director Mansoor Al Abdali announced recently at an investor forum hosted by the Muscat Stock Exchange (MSX), the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zawya.com\/en\/projects\/industry\/oman-to-repurpose-gas-pipelines-to-transport-hydrogen-edxds220\">Oman Daily Observer<\/a> reported yesterday. A feasibility study on integrating hydrogen into existing natgas networks is close to being complete, with initial tests transporting hydrogen at low levels proving \u201cpromising,\u201d Al Abdali is reported as saying.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Oman has big hydrogen plans:<\/strong> Oman\u2019s hydrogen strategy envisions the country producing the equivalent of 10 GW of hydrogen by the end of the decade and 30 GW by 2040. Several large-scale projects have been announced over the past 18 months. Omani oil and gas company OQ is working with InterContinental Energy and EnerTech on a 14 GW facility which will be powered by 25 GW of wind and solar energy. ACME and Scatec <a href=\"https:\/\/scatec.com\/2022\/03\/07\/scatec-partners-with-acme-group-to-develop-a-large-scale-green-ammonia-facility-in-oman\/#\">are partnering<\/a> on a green ammonia plant that will produce 1.2 mn tons of ammonia powered by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acme.in\/media-release\/19\/acme-inks-land-agreement-to-set-up-green-ammonia-and-green-hydrogen-facility-at-oman\">3.5 GW of renewable energy<\/a>. The country plans to export much of what it produces, and earlier this month said it would begin looking at <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/69c3fe07-4bdf-4ab1-a900-a1caa0cdf119\">constructing a hydrogen export terminal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why use the natgas network to move hydrogen? Because it\u2019s cost- and time-efficient: <\/strong>The cost of transporting hydrogen using the existing natgas pipeline will be substantially lower than investing in building new networks, Al Abdali said. Using gas pipelines is \u201cby far the most economically viable method\u201d to transport hydrogen, as a \u201cvery high energy transportation capacity can be achieved,\u201d according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.siemens-energy.com\/global\/en\/news\/magazine\/2020\/repurposing-natural-gas-infrastructure-for-hydrogen.html\">Siemens Energy<\/a>. The process is both cost and time-efficient, because it doesn\u2019t require the construction of new infrastructure, CEO of German gas pipeline operator <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gascade.de\/en\/\">Gascade<\/a> Christoph von dem Bussche is quoted as saying.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Figuring out how to transport hydrogen is important if we want the tech to take off: <\/strong>Figuring out how to transport hydrogen is key to creating an effective and affordable hydrogen economy, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irena.org\/publications\/2022\/Jul\/Global-Hydrogen-Trade-Outlook\">a report<\/a> by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) picked up by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reutersevents.com\/renewables\/renewables\/hydrogen-costs-hang-solving-transportation\">Reuters<\/a> saying last month. But moving hydrogen \u2014 \u201cthe universe\u2019s lightest and most energy-dense (by weight) element\u201d \u2014 in a way that\u2019s efficient and affordable is \u201ceasier said than done,\u201d the newswire wrote.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Major issues to address include cost reduction, increasing energy efficiency, maintaining hydrogen purity and minimizing leakage<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/eere\/fuelcells\/hydrogen-delivery\">notes<\/a> the US energy efficiency and renewable energy department. Building delivery infrastructure is also a big challenge \u2014 requiring time, investment, and the combination of different technologies.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This is why repurposing natgas pipelines is being looked at \u2014 especially in Europe: <\/strong>Some members of the <a href=\"https:\/\/ehb.eu\/#mission\">European Hydrogen Backbone (EHB)<\/a> initiative \u2014 a group of 31 energy infrastructure operators \u2014 are working together to see how thousands of miles of pipelines across Europe could be repurposed to carry hydrogen, and avoid them turning into \u201cstranded assets,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/cop\/europes-gas-firms-prime-pipelines-hydrogen-highway-2021-11-18\/\">Reuters reporte<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/cop\/europes-gas-firms-prime-pipelines-hydrogen-highway-2021-11-18\/\">d<\/a> in November 2021. Some 69% of these existing pipelines could be converted for up to USD 94 bn, they estimated at the time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In MENA, Oman seems to be the only country seriously exploring it so far: <\/strong>Though interest in hydrogen in the GCC is substantial, \u201cthe topic of transport is still open,\u201d notes a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swp-berlin.org\/en\/publication\/the-hydrogen-ambitions-of-the-gulf-states\">July 2022 paper<\/a> by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swp-berlin.org\/en\/\">German Institute for International and Security Affairs<\/a>. Qatar is currently focused on natgas export for blue hydrogen production overseas, while other countries are \u201cstill struggling with the right strategy,\u201d the paper notes. When it comes to Oman\u2019s overall hydrogen strategy, the country is \u201ccreating new structures and introducing various projects,\u201d it adds.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But could it one day be on the cards for North Africa too? <\/strong>Existing infrastructure carrying natgas in Algeria and Libya to Europe via Italy and Spain should be leveraged for hydrogen export, argues a <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/chapter\/10.1007\/978-3-030-74586-8_5\">June 2021<\/a> open access study, published in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Shaping-Inclusive-Energy-Transition-Weijnen\/dp\/3030745856\">the book<\/a> Shaping an Inclusive Energy Transition, edited by academics from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tudelft.nl\/en\/\">Delft University of Technology<\/a>. Gas transport infrastructure in North Africa and Europe could be used to carry first blue, then green, hydrogen between 2030 and 2035, the study suggests. Innovafeed houses the world\u2019s largest vertical insect farm in France to produce insect-based protein.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who else was involved? <\/strong>The round was co-led by several investors: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/future-french-champions\/about\/\">Future French Champions<\/a>, a joint venture between QIA and investment bank <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bpifrance.com\/\">Bpi France<\/a>, Singapore-based PE fund <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abcworld.com.sg\/\">ABC Impact<\/a>, capital firm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.growforward.com\/\">Grow Forward<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ca-idia.com\/\">IDIA Capital Investment<\/a>. Previous investors global food corporations <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adm.com\/en-us\/\">Archer-Daniels-Midland Company (ADM)<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cargill.com\/\">Cargill<\/a> also joined the mix along with climate-focused investor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.creadev.com\/\">Creadev<\/a> and Singapore-owned <a href=\"https:\/\/www.temasek.com.sg\/en\/index\">Temasek<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What exactly does Innovafeed do?<\/strong> It basically tries to replace animal feed with the protein from insects instead of actual animals and plants. The company so far has two insect production farms in France. The protein is then used as nutrition alternatives for plants, poultry, swine, fish and pets.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What does this have to do with climate?<\/strong> Although regenerative agriculture can be carbon negative (taking more out of the environment than it emits), much of the large-scale industrial agriculture that has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrdc.org\/stories\/industrial-agriculture-101#whatis\">damaging effects on the environment<\/a> is designed to produce animal feed. Innovafeed says what it does \u201cstreamlines\u201d food production to minimize waste: oil is extracted from insects for poultry and swine nutrition, insect protein nourishes fish, and insect manure makes organic fertilizer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The investment round will be used for expansion, product development and opening new <\/strong><strong>sites. <\/strong>Innovafeed wants to increase its production capacity and expand its Nesle site in the north of France. It\u2019s also looking to expand into the US with the construction of a new production plant in Illinois and further develop its R&D efforts. <strong>Since launching in 2016, Innovafeed secured a total of EUR 200 mn in funding. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>This isn\u2019t QIA\u2019s first startup or climate investment<\/strong> In 2020, the fund announced it would no longer deploy new investment in hydrocarbons, and as of 2021, almost 50% of the infrastructure power generation projects in its portfolio are \u201czero-emission investments\u201d, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/thepeninsulaqatar.com\/article\/26\/02\/2022\/qia-investing-in-zero-emission-power-generation-projects\">The Peninsula Qatar<\/a>. They <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/company\/press\/plant-based-foods-market-to-hit-162-billion-in-next-decade-projects-bloomberg-intelligence\/\">could constitute 7.7%<\/a> of the global protein market by 2030 \u2014 rising to USD 162 bn from USD 29.4 bn in 2020, according to an August 2021 Bloomberg Intelligence report. In fact, by 2040, 60% of protein consumed by humans <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2019\/jun\/12\/most-meat-in-2040-will-not-come-from-slaughtered-animals-report\">could be<\/a> either grown in vats or replaced by plant-based products that resemble meat, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kearney.com\/consumer-retail\/article\/-\/insights\/we-eat-what-we-are\">a 2019 Kearney report<\/a> predicted.<\/p>\n<p>(We have deep suspicion about the impact on human health of highly processed frankenfoods such as these \u2014 suspicions we\u2019ll get into another day. In all cases, it is clear that a growing number of businesses of all sizes are looking into the sector.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>This growth of the sector involves some cool and cutting-edge tech, <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitalfoodlab.com\/alternative-proteins-talking\/\">note foodtech entrepreneurs<\/a> the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitalfoodlab.com\/about-us\/\">Digital Food Lab<\/a>. It could range from mixing various plants to produce a meat or dairy-like texture (as is the case with plant-based alternatives), to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.just-food.com\/analysis\/leading-the-charge-the-companies-at-the-cutting-edge-of-cell-based-protein-product-development\/\">\u201cgrowing\u201d meat<\/a> in a lab (as is the case with <a href=\"https:\/\/gfi.org\/science\/the-science-of-cultivated-meat\/\">cultivation or cellular agriculture<\/a>), to finding yeast or bacteria that can produce specific protein, or even genetically modifying the yeast or bacteria to create the protein (as is the case with fermentation).<\/p>\n<p><strong>The argument: That traditional meat and dairy production are <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/04\/17\/climate\/meat-industry-climate-impact.html\">a big contributors<\/a><\/strong><strong> to the emissions driving climate change:<\/strong> The global production of food is responsible for about a third of all GHG emissions from human activity, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s43016-021-00358-x\">a 2021 study<\/a> published in Nature Food. 57% of these emissions <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2021\/sep\/13\/meat-greenhouses-gases-food-production-study#:~:text=11%20months%20old-,Meat%20accounts%20for%20nearly%2060%25%20of%20all%20greenhouse,from%20food%20production%2C%20study%20finds&text=The%20global%20production%20of%20food,major%20new%20study%20has%20found\">come from<\/a> the use of animals for food and livestock feed, compared to 29% from the cultivation of plant-based foods.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Alternative proteins have the potential to dramatically slow climate change<\/strong>, says a March 2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/business-functions\/mckinsey-digital\/our-insights\/make-room-for-alternative-proteins-what-it-takes-to-build-a-new-sector\">McKinsey interview<\/a> with global sector representatives. \u201cCellular agriculture has the potential to reduce GHG emissions by 78-96% compared to traditional agriculture,\u201d one leader notes. \u201cAlternative proteins are a key climate solution. Tremendous [chances] exist for companies and investors to participate at every point along the value chain,\u201d noted a rep of US NGO the Good Food Institute <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zawya.com\/en\/press-release\/alternative-proteins-are-the-future-for-the-planet-and-people-says-indusrty-expert-lfb5xu9o\">in late-2021<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The MENA market is still small, but it\u2019s growing: <\/strong>The MENA alternative protein market is expected to reach USD 2.71 bn by 2029, up from an estimated 1.03 bn in 2021, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.databridgemarketresearch.com\/reports\/middle-east-and-africa-alternative-proteins-market\">according to<\/a> Data Bridge Market Research. The MENA meat replacement market <a href=\"https:\/\/timesofoman.com\/article\/113494-oia-launches-project-to-produce-alternative-protein-from-dates\">stands at<\/a> roughly USD 180 mn, with a 10% CAGR, while the alternative dairy market stands at some USD 1.2 bn with a 12% CAGR, said the CEO of US-based startup <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mycoiq.com\/\">MycoTech<\/a>, quoted in a <a href=\"https:\/\/timesofoman.com\/article\/113494-oia-launches-project-to-produce-alternative-protein-from-dates\">February 2022 article<\/a>. Its whey protein market <a href=\"https:\/\/agfundernews.com\/why-oman-is-investing-in-alt-protein-with-a-us-%F0%9F%8D%84-startup\">is expected<\/a> to grow to some USD 1.38 bn in 2026, up from USD 1.01 bn in 2021, he added.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Recent regional developments could fuel this: A partnership between Qatar and Eat Just will see them build a cultivated-meat facility:<\/strong> US-based startup Eat Just \u2014 which makes cultured chicken and vegan eggs from mung beans \u2014 is partnering with Qatari state-backed Doha Venture Capital and the Qatar Freezones Authority <a href=\"https:\/\/www.just-food.com\/news\/eat-just-joins-partners-in-qatar-for-cultivated-meat-facility\/\">to build<\/a> a cultivated-meat facility in Qatar\u2019s Umm Alhoul Freezone, which it claims will be \u201cthe first-ever cultivated meat facility in the [MENA] region.\u201d This <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-08-31\/eat-just-to-build-cultured-meat-plant-in-qatar-amid-global-push\">could take<\/a> two years and cost USD 200 mn. The Qatari government has already granted it an export license.<\/p>\n<p><strong>There\u2019s a joint venture between the Oman Investment Authority and MycoTech to make mushroom-based protein: <\/strong>MycoTech and the Oman Investment Authority (OIA) agreed to set up a joint venture, <a href=\"https:\/\/pitchbook.com\/profiles\/company\/496154-98\">Vital Foods Technologies<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/foodmatterslive.com\/article\/oman-mycotechnology-food-waste-mushroom-alternative-protein\/\">to use<\/a> the natural sugar present in dates as carbon to fuel the production of mushroom-based protein. OIA and MycoTech are due to start construction on a production facility in 1H 2023, with commercial operations due to begin in 2Q 2025. The aim is <a href=\"https:\/\/agfundernews.com\/why-oman-is-investing-in-alt-protein-with-a-us-%F0%9F%8D%84-startup\">to process<\/a> some 16k tonnes of dates a year. OIA led a Series E investment funding round in MycoTech earlier this year, which raised USD 85 mn.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And Israeli foodtech firm <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/savoreat.com\/\">SavorEat<\/a><\/strong><strong> launched a 3D printed burger that\u2019s created on site and <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/manufactur3dmag.com\/savoreat-launches-personalised-plant-based-3d-printed-burgers\/\">is being served<\/a><\/strong><strong> at restaurants in Israel.<\/strong> While <a href=\"https:\/\/impossiblefoods.com\/products\/burger\">Impossible Foods<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmeat.com\/\">Beyond Meat<\/a> also offer 3D printed burgers (which are usually frozen and cooked on a grill), SavorEat\u2019s technology allows customers to create their burgers on site using a 3D printer.
