A gradual, longer-term approach is the answer, they say.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-03\"><\/a> <strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #1-<\/strong> <strong>France will help the UAE build components for its nuclear <\/strong><strong>program:<\/strong> State-owned <a href=\"https:\/\/www.enec.gov.ae\/\">Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC)<\/a> signed an MoU with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/csfn\/\">French nuclear industry group CSFN<\/a> to develop a local supply chain for the UAE\u2019s nuclear program and ENEC-owned Barakah nuclear energy plant, the corporation said yesterday in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.enec.gov.ae\/news\/latest-news\/enec-strengthens-uae-france-cooperation-in-nuclear-energy-sector-through-new-e-fusion-2022\/\">a statement<\/a>. This will involve expanding local manufacturing of components and equipment for nuclear energy, as well as sharing knowledge, skills and expertise, the statement notes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nuclear power will play an essential supplementary role in the UAE\u2019s renewable energy strategy<\/strong>, Yousef Al Ali, the energy ministry\u2019s assistant undersecretary for electricity, water and future energy, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.utilities-me.com\/utilities\/uae-leads-energy-transition-in-its-race-to-net-zero\">Utilities Middle East<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>^^ We have more on both stories in this morning\u2019s news well, below.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-07\"><\/a> <strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #2- Is Lebanon slowly becoming a case study for the <\/strong><strong>importance of solar?<\/strong> Rolling blackouts and a dependence on expensive <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3QYWt2q\">diesel-powered generators<\/a> has driven Lebanese homes and businesses to increasingly look to solar energy and a viable replacement, France 24 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/live-news\/20220911-a-necessity-lebanon-s-forced-conversion-to-solar\">reported<\/a> last week. One of the success stories highlighted in the report is the mountain village of Toula, which used to run on only three hours of electricity a day, until donors funded a USD 100k, 185-panel solar farm. The village now has 17 hours of consistent electricity. Now businesses are getting in on the act: Spinney\u2019s is investing in solar to cut down its USD 800k-1.4 mn monthly generator bill.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE DANGER ZONE- Syria\u2019s 2022 grain crop has been \u201cdecimated\u201d by climate <\/strong><strong>change and conflict<\/strong>, officials from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), tell <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/commodities\/exclusive-climate-change-conflict-decimate-syrias-grain-crop-un-fao-2022-09-20\/\">Reuters<\/a>. The country\u2019s 2022 wheat harvest was down some 75% from pre-crisis volumes and its barley harvest was almost \u201cnonexistent.\u201d 70% of Syria\u2019s grain crop relies on rainfall, as the country\u2019s irrigation system remains underdeveloped. This year, rainfall started late and fell in untraditional patterns, delaying the start of the planting season. An early stop to rainfall cut the season short.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-05\"><\/a> <strong>This is now a global problem: The world\u2019s top food and agriculture companies could <\/strong><strong>see losses of USD 150 bn <\/strong><strong>by 2030<\/strong>, if they don\u2019t adapt to climate change policies and changing consumer behavior, according to a UN report published yesterday and seen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/environment\/farm-food-investors-face-150-bln-loss-climate-change-report-2022-09-20\/\">by Reuters<\/a>. Growers and folks in food retail could lose up to a quarter of their value in the coming eight years if they don\u2019t get in step with both climate-change-driven government policy and consumer behavior, it warns. The report found that 40 big companies in the sector would see an average decline in value of 7%.<\/p>\n<p><strong>One knock on the report: It suggests there are opportunities in products including plant-based \u201cmeat.\u201d <\/strong>Whether you\u2019re an obligate carnivore or a vegan, we think whole foods, not frankenfoods, are the answer to the health problems caused by poor diet.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-04\"><\/a> <strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY OUTSIDE THE REGION- <\/strong><strong>UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres wants windfall taxes to be redirected to countries suffering climate-caused loss and damages<\/strong>, as well as \u201cpeople struggling with rising food and energy prices,\u201d multiple news outlets reported yesterday. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/environment\/polluters-must-pay-says-un-chief-urges-taxes-help-climate-victims-2022-09-20\/\">Reuters<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/united-nations-general-assembly-antonio-guterres-climate-and-environment-cb3e386316a2fbd8ebab602f505b42f6\">AP<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/09\/20\/uns-guterres-says-polluters-must-pay-calls-for-tax-on-fossil-fuels.html\">CNBC<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2022\/09\/20\/energy\/energy-climate-windfall-tax-unga-intl\/index.html\">CNN<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-06\"><\/a> <strong>ALSO- New research shows some of the biggest PE firms are still investing USD bns in <\/strong><strong>dirty energy: <\/strong>Eight global private equity firms with substantial energy portfolios are exposing investors to unknown financial risks thanks to their continued investment in high-emissions projects amid escalating climate disasters and the energy transition push, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/6000718.fs1.hubspotusercontent-na1.net\/hubfs\/6000718\/PESP_AFR_Report_Climate-Demands-Scorecard_Sept2022.pdf?__hstc=236760222.b4961f4d4a292a995a49efda91be9b36.1663150871993.1663150871993.1663153549845.2&__hssc=236760222.1.1663161591069&__hsfp=3108584445&hsCtaTracking=0fdd93c6-8dbb-4457-a89f-bd76f1f93a6a%7C1e32681b-ae49-43fd-b292-bbbeff543e7e\">a report (pdf)<\/a> published last week by activist groups Private Equity Stakeholder Project (<a href=\"https:\/\/pestakeholder.org\/\">Pesp<\/a>) and Americans for Financial Reform Education Fund (<a href=\"https:\/\/realbankreform.org\/\">Afref<\/a>). These firms manage a combined USD 3.6 tn in assets, including some USD 216 bn in energy projects \u2014 mostly fossil fuels, the report says. The PE industry as a whole has invested some USD 1 tn in energy since 2010, with most of this in oil, gas and coal, it adds.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The best and the worst:<\/strong> The activists looked at the climate credentials of eight firms, based on publicly available information. The highest rated firm, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tpg.com\/\">TPG<\/a>, has only two fossil fuel companies in its energy portfolio, with an estimated investment of USD 1.3 bn \u2014 giving it a B. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carlyle.com\/\">Carlyle<\/a> has assets under management of about USD 24 bn in an energy portfolio that includes 42 fossil fuel companies, scoring an F.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Should PE watch out for the new Elliot Ness of climate finance? <\/strong>A US Treasury Department agency that oversees the country\u2019s largest banks has hired its first \u201cclimate cop,\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/09\/12\/business\/banking-regulator-climate-risk-officer.html\">New York Times reports<\/a>, citing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.occ.gov\/news-issuances\/news-releases\/2022\/nr-occ-2022-110.html\">a statement<\/a> published on Monday last week. The US Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.occ.gov\/about\/who-we-are\/index-who-we-are.html\">OCC<\/a>) has hired Yue (Nina) Chen as its chief climate risk officer, the statement said. Global energy transition goals \u2014 which include rapid divestment from fossil fuels to move towards renewables \u2014 aren\u2019t viable as existing capacity can\u2019t satisfy demand, Saudi Aramco CEO Amin Nasser and the UAE energy ministry assistant undersecretary for electricity, water and future energy Yousef Al Ali argued in separate conversations at the beginning of the week.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Clean energy \u201climitations\u201d mean a full replacement of natgas as an energy source, which isn\u2019t yet possible<\/strong>, Al Ali told Utilities Middle East in an interview <a href=\"https:\/\/www.utilities-me.com\/utilities\/uae-leads-energy-transition-in-its-race-to-net-zero\">published yesterday<\/a>. Solar energy is an \u201cintermittent\u201d energy source, only available during the day, and energy storage costs are high, he said. \u201cThis presents a challenge in terms of what renewable energy can accomplish.\u201d Gas or combined-cycle power will continue to play an important role in the energy mix, said Al Ali, stopping short of saying when he sees that changing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The UAE in particular is limited by its natural resources: <\/strong>The UAE doesn\u2019t have the \u201ceconomical wind resources\u201d available to some other countries to complement solar energy and increase the share of renewables in the nation\u2019s energy mix, Al Ali said. Solar will lead on the renewables front and then \u201cnuclear will have to be there to cover for the base load requirements,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The energy crisis spurred by the Russia-Ukraine war is making a full transition away from fossil fuels harder<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/capping-energy-bills-taxing-companies-not-long-term-solution-energy-crisis-2022-09-20\/\">Reuters<\/a> cites Aramco\u2019s Nasser as saying at a forum in Switzerland yesterday. A plan <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/a5be2d67-244a-45d7-84d1-a7949cac8667\">unveiled last week<\/a> by the European Commission to cap consumer energy bills and tax energy companies amid energy shortages and soaring prices isn\u2019t a long-term solution to the crisis, Nasser said, arguing instead that the root cause of the problem was continued underinvestment in hydrocarbons when viable alternatives still aren\u2019t ready for prime time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The energy crisis doesn\u2019t mean climate goals should change<\/strong>, Reuters quotes Nasser saying, but that we need to amend our energy transition plans, he added. \u201cThe best help that policy makers and every stakeholder can offer is to unite the world around a much more credible new transition plan,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>When it comes to gas, the increasing efficiency of combined cycle plants will help in emissions reduction:<\/strong> Greater efficiency in gas turbine technology has reduced the gas carbon footprint to 300 kg per megawatt from half a ton per megawatt \u2014 meaning emissions from gas are around 3x lower than coal, Al Ali said.
