Don\u2019t miss our first Newsmakers interview in this morning\u2019s news well, below.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SIGN OF THE TIMES #1- Is there a better time to launch a daily on all things climate than <\/strong><strong>during world water week?<\/strong> Organized by the Stockholm International Water Institute, interested stakeholders can attend a number of workshops and sessions discussing new ways of managing water and how to tackle food security, agriculture, technology, biodiversity and climate pain points. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldwaterweek.org\/programme\/programme-overview\">Check out their full program here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-01\"><\/a> <strong>HAPPENING TODA<\/strong><strong>Y- <\/strong>The <strong>Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank (ADCB)<\/strong> will start setting up meetings with investors starting today for the <strong>issuance of USD-denominated debut green bonds<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zawya.com\/en\/markets\/fixed-income\/abu-dhabi-commercial-bank-hires-banks-for-debut-green-bonds-sale-pc67yw83\">Zawya<\/a> reports.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The inside story:<\/strong> ADCB is looking to sell five-year senior unsecured green bonds of \u201cbenchmark size,\u201d subject to market conditions. Proceeds will go towards financing or refinancing green loans eligible under ADBC's <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adcb.com\/en\/multimedia\/pdfs\/2022\/august\/adcb-green-bond-framework.pdf\">green bond framework<\/a>, which the lender released earlier this month. The bank\u2019s most recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adcb.com\/en\/multimedia\/pdfs\/2022\/july\/Earnings-PressRelease-Q2-H1-2022.pdf\">earnings release<\/a> stated that it aims to provide AED 35 bn in green financing by 2030.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Advisors- <\/strong>Barclays and ING were hired as joint sustainability structuring advisors, while Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank, BofA Securities, JPMorgan, Mizuho and SMBC Nikko are joint lead managers and bookrunners on the issuance.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY OUTSIDE THE REGION- There are a few<\/strong><strong>: The US state of <\/strong><strong>California <\/strong><strong>will ban the sale of petrol-powered cars in 2035<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/08\/25\/california-bans-the-sale-of-new-gas-powered-cars-by-2035.html\">CNBC reports<\/a>. California is the country\u2019s most populous state and a center of US car culture. The California Air Resources Board issued the rule last week in a bid to push car manufacturers to speed up production of cleaner vehicles.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MEANWHILE- French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne announced a USD 1.5 bn fund to <\/strong><strong>speed up the country\u2019s transition to clean energy<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-08-28\/french-pm-leaves-door-open-for-windfall-tax-on-super-profits?sref=mmeFTDW1#xj4y7vzkg\">according to Bloomberg<\/a>, quoting an interview with French newspaper, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leparisien.fr\/politique\/elisabeth-borne-les-francais-peuvent-compter-sur-moi-27-08-2022-JJRC7FUGFNBNVLQZX5ZGKJT6AA.php\">Le Parisien<\/a> over the weekend.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SIGN OF THE TIMES #2- <\/strong><strong>ECB\u2019s Lagarde is ringing <\/strong><strong>the climate alarm bell: <\/strong>European Central Bank (ECB) chief Christine Lagarde warned of the impact of climate change on prices, ins. and the financial sector in an interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/madame.lefigaro.fr\/business\/christine-lagarde-ma-foi-en-l-homme-est-inebranlable-20220825\">Madam Figaro<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/rates-bonds\/ecbs-lagarde-climate-change-has-clear-impact-inflation-2022-08-25\/\">Reuters<\/a> has the nuts and bolts in English). The ECB needs to take that into account when making decisions, she added.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>WORTH READING- Does ESG affect M&A and corporate strategy? Apparently.<\/strong> Some 56% of surveyed professionals think it affects corporate strategy and 42% believe it plays an important role in M&A, according to a study by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colemanrg.com\/\">Coleman Research<\/a>. The study on the impact of ESG on corporate strategies and M&A activity is based on a survey of 500 experts across the US, EMEA, and APAC. <strong>You can get the full report <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/use.colemanrg.com\/esg-ma-report\/\">here<\/a><\/strong><strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>THE COUNTDOWN TO COP27- <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Egypt wants to see real investment, not just pledges: <\/strong>The summit will aim to attract concrete investments \u2014 and not just pledges \u2014 in fields including renewable energy, green hydrogen projects, agriculture, and food and water security, Egypt <strong>climate envoy Mahmoud Mohieldin<\/strong> said in an interview on Egyptian talk show Masaa DMC (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=50_jgXckc2s\">watch, runtime: 37:26<\/a> in Arabic).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Go big or go home: The EU will push hard against the world\u2019s biggest economies<\/strong>, according to an EU draft document <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/environment\/eu-urge-big-polluters-toughen-climate-pledges-by-cop27-summit-draft-2022-08-25\/\">obtained by Reuters<\/a>. The report, prepared by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eea.europa.eu\/\">European Environmental Agency (EEA)<\/a>, calls on all 200 countries participating in COP27 to improve their climate change targets. <strong>\u201cGlobal climate action remains insufficient,\u201d<\/strong> the note says. The draft, which faces weeks of negotiations and amendments before approval in October, is expected to push countries to set more ambitious pollution targets to stop global warming spiraling beyond 1.5\u00b0C.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Coming to COP27? You may meet Prince Charles. <\/strong>The Prince of Wales\u2019 Sustainable Markets Initiative announced it will host a two-day \u201cTerra Carta Action Forum\u201d in Sharm El Sheikh to take place during COP27, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sustainable-markets.org\/news\/to-mark-75-days-until-cop27-his-royal-highness-the-prince-of-wales-sustainable-markets-initiative-announces-the-terra-carta-action-forum\">according to a statement<\/a>. The jaw-fest will focus on how to deliver on \u201cthe promises made in Glasgow\u201d at COP26 with the aim of unlocking USD tns of private sector investment for climate action, the Prince of Wales said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nigeria is \u201cengaging with partners to secure an initial USD 10 bn support package <\/strong><strong>ahead of COP27<\/strong>,\u201d the country\u2019s vice president, Yemi Osinbajo, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zawya.com\/en\/projects\/utilities\/nigeria-needs-410bln-to-implement-energy-transition-osinbajo-hyfn7qf5\">said<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zawya.com\/en\/projects\/utilities\/nigeria-needs-410bln-to-implement-energy-transition-osinbajo-hyfn7qf5\">during a virtual event<\/a> last week. The package would be similar to South Africa\u2019s \u201cjust energy transition\u201d partnership announced at COP26. Tackling climate change must go hand-in-hand with improving access to energy, he added. Nigeria needs to spend some USD 10 bn annually \u201cabove business as usual spending\u201d to roll out a planned energy transition that would see it hit net-zero by 2060, said Osinbajo.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>THE DANGER ZONE- <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-08\"><\/a> <strong>Some 33 mn (yes, mn) people have been displaced by flooding in Pakis<\/strong><strong>tan.<\/strong> The death toll from monsoon floods in Pakistan has crossed 1k, as several countries, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.app.com.pk\/global\/france-ready-to-support-flood-victims-of-pakistan-macron\/\">France<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.app.com.pk\/national\/pm-uae-president-discuss-delivery-of-assistance-in-flood-affected-areas\/\">UAE<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.app.com.pk\/national\/irans-president-assures-all-out-support-to-pm-for-flood-relief\/\">Iran<\/a> continue to pledge emergency aid to mitigate the worsening crisis. At least 33 mn people have also been displaced from their homes since June when monsoon season started. Pakistan Climate Change Minister Sherry Rehman called this year\u2019s deadly monsoon season a \u201cserious climate catastrophe,\u201d declaring a national emergency for what has been the heaviest rainfall Pakistan has experienced since the 1960s. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/asia-pacific\/pakistan-floods-have-affected-over-30-million-people-climate-change-minister-2022-08-25\/\">Reuters<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/floods-pakistan-weather-monsoons-sherry-rehman-d1f691eb89f8fe3f5d31c7d406d71b76?utm_source=homepage&utm_medium=TopNews&utm_campaign=position_5\">AP<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/08\/27\/1119821478\/pakistan-pins-deadly-floods-on-climate-change\">NPR<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/2022\/08\/28\/pakistan-floods-a-thousand-dead-millions-affected-by-horrors-of-climate-change\">BBC<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><strong>CLIMATE DIPLOMACY-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Germany and Morocco to discuss ties, renewables: <\/strong>German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock discussed climate, renewable energy and green hydrogen projects with Moroccan Foreign Affairs Minister Nasser Bourita during a two-day visit late last week, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.auswaertiges-amt.de\/en\/newsroom\/news\/joint-declaration-germany-morocco\/2548280\">German ministry\u2019s website<\/a>. The two said they would intensify their long-standing cooperation in sustainable development, sustainable agriculture and forestry, biodiversity, climate, renewable energy, water and food security.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Renewables and food security were on the agenda for a sit-down between UAE <\/strong><strong>President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Greek Prime <\/strong><strong>Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zawya.com\/en\/economy\/gcc\/uae-president-greek-pm-review-consolidating-their-strategic-partnership-pkpc73k3\">according to Zawya<\/a>. The push towards investing in green hydrogen comes as the government looks to capitalize on investment momentum in green energy in the lead-up to COP27 in Sharm El Sheikh this November.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who was involved? <\/strong>The MoUs were signed between SCZONE, the Sovereign Fund of Egypt (TSFE), Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) and New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA), and seven companies from the UK, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and India.<\/p>\n<p>The breakdown of the agreements and investments are as follows<strong>:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acme.in\/\">India\u2019s ACME Group<\/a><\/strong> will build a <strong>USD 13 bn<\/strong> hydrogen production plant with a total capacity of 2.2 mn tons annually;<\/li>\n<li>UK-headquartered <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.globeleq.com\/\">Globeleq<\/a><\/strong> is set to establish a <strong>USD 11 bn<\/strong> green fuel production plant with an annual production capacity of 2 mn tons;<\/li>\n<li>Saudi company <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.alfanar.com\/\">Al Fanar<\/a><\/strong> wants to build a <strong>USD 4 bn<\/strong> green fuel production facility with a capacity of 500k tons per annum;<\/li>\n<li>UAE\u2019s <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/alcazarenergy.com\/\">Alcazar<\/a><\/strong> is looking at constructing an industrial complex for green fuel production with a total production capacity of 230k tons annually, at an investment value of <strong>USD 2 bn<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li>Our friends at the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.act.is\/\">UK\u2019s Actis<\/a><\/strong> will establish green fuel production plants worth <strong>USD 1.5 bn<\/strong> with a production capacity of 200k tons annually;<\/li>\n<li>Egypt-based <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/medenergypartners.com\/\">Mediterranean Energy Partners<\/a><\/strong> will invest <strong>USD 250 mn<\/strong> to establish a green ammonia plant with a production capacity of 120k tons per year;<\/li>\n<li>The UAE\u2019s <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/kkpower.ae\/\">K&K Group<\/a><\/strong> is set to build a green hydrogen production plant of a yearly capacity of 230k tons, but details about the investment value were not disclosed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s next: <\/strong>The companies will now begin conducting feasibility studies on the plants, the statement says.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is the region as a whole doing in the field of green hydrogen? <\/strong>The MENA region is projected to be the world\u2019s largest supplier of green hydrogen in the coming years with the region accounting for the highest number of export-oriented low carbon hydrogen projects, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cebcmena.com\/ACTIVITIES\/NEWS\/harnessing-low-carbon-hydrogen-potential-in-the-mena-region\">according to in-house research<\/a> by the Abu Dhabi-based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cebcmena.com\/\">Clean Energy Business Council<\/a>. Egypt, in turn, will be counting on the support of key regional allies \u2014 including the UAE, which is hosting COP28 in 2023, <a href=\"http:\/\/wam.ae\/en\/details\/1395303059702\">at Dubai Expo City<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The UAE has long been a leader in MENA in the push for action and multilateral <\/strong><strong>cooperation on <\/strong><strong>climate change. <\/strong>It is the permanent host country for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irena.org\/\">International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA)<\/a> and led the region in signing and ratifying the <a href=\"https:\/\/unfccc.int\/process-and-meetings\/the-paris-agreement\/the-paris-agreement\">2015 Paris Agreement<\/a>, committing to an economy-wide reduction in emissions. Prior to becoming minister <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mariammalmheiri\/status\/1443202063958118400\">in 2021<\/a>, Almheiri was minister of state for food and water security and minister of state for food security, with responsibilities that included monitoring the UAE\u2019s food and water supply, directing investment and building partnerships in food and water tech, and overseeing food security infrastructure development. Earlier, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uaeu.ac.ae\/en\/about\/board-of-trustees\/mariam-almheiri.shtml\">she was<\/a> assistant undersecretary for water resources and nature conservation affairs at the Climate Change ministry, where she oversaw the biodiversity, fisheries, coastal and marine sustainability, and marine research departments.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We spoke with Almheiri <\/strong>to discuss the UAE\u2019s climate investment, its preparations for COP28 and hopes for COP27. In her own words:<\/p>\n<p><strong>ENTERPRISE CLIMATE: What outcome are you hoping for from COP27?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>MARIAM ALMHEIRI: <\/strong>We are keen to support the Egyptian presidency in delivering a successful COP. With a focus on implementation, we hope to see progress on funding, particularly the USD 100 bn climate finance commitment made by developed countries. This is crucial to enabling developing countries to meet their climate change mitigation and adaptation goals.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, we look forward to seeing new developments on adaptation, loss and damage. We would particularly like to see both political prioritization and investment to address critical subjects that impact climate change such as food systems, nutrition, water, early warning systems, and nature-based solutions. These are foundations for adaptation, not to mention prevention of loss and damage \u2014 a pillar of the Paris Agreement that will require special attention in Sharm El Sheikh.<\/p>\n<p>We fully support the two-year <a href=\"https:\/\/unfccc.int\/documents\/311181\">Glasgow-Sharm El Sheikh work program<\/a> as an important stepping stone in accelerating the <a href=\"https:\/\/unfccc.int\/topics\/adaptation-and-resilience\/the-big-picture\/new-elements-and-dimensions-of-adaptation-under-the-paris-agreement-article-7\">Global Goal on Adaptation<\/a>, to be concluded at COP28. We also welcome the outcomes of the <a href=\"https:\/\/unfccc.int\/documents\/310475\">Glasgow Climate Pact<\/a>, which acknowledged loss and damage as a priority. COP27\u2019s focus on these areas is crucial, at a time when communities all over the globe \u2014 and especially in developing countries \u2014 face devastation from climate impacts and need clear signals from the international community that the response will be commensurate.<\/p>\n<p>In this context, the <a href=\"https:\/\/unfccc.int\/topics\/global-stocktake\/global-stocktake#:~:text=The%20global%20stocktake%20of%20the,Decision%2019%2FCMA.\">Global Stocktake of the Paris Agreement (GST)<\/a> offers [a chance] to reflect on achievements made thus far and ratchet ambition for the next 5-10 years of global climate action \u2014 we welcome the start of the process in Glasgow and encourage progress through to its conclusion at COP28. For this to be successful, it is crucial for all countries to close the emission reduction gap by raising their ambitions ahead of COP27.<\/p>\n<p>Another outcome we hope to see is the elaboration of synergies between climate action and differentiated development paths. The investment case for climate action, such as in renewables, carbon capture and storage, climate-smart agriculture and biodiversity conservation, is encouraging and cuts across different economic sectors.<\/p>\n<p>COP27 is a critical moment to showcase the economic and job benefits of a growing suite of climate action tools, allowing countries in different circumstances to find their own unique paths to achieving the Paris Agreement and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.undp.org\/sustainable-development-goals#:~:text=The%20Sustainable%20Development%20Goals%20(SDGs)%2C%20also%20known%20as%20the,people%20enjoy%20peace%20and%20prosperity.\">Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)<\/a>. We are aiming for COP27 to be a catalyst for these practical solutions \u2014 and to evidence that ambition can come from all corners of the world.<\/p>\n<p><strong>EC: What can we expect from COP28? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>MA: <\/strong>We seek to leverage our solid track record as a global climate action convener to deliver a productive event with high youth engagement that builds a strong economic case for climate action \u2014 and mobilizes countries to increase the scale and pace of their efforts to address climate change. We are committed to driving multilateral diplomacy aimed at preserving our planet for the next generations and building a better future for all humankind.<\/p>\n<p>Inclusivity will be the guiding principle of COP28. We understand that each region and country has a different starting point and might move at its own pace. We will ensure that the voice of every nation \u2014 whether developed or developing \u2014 and every stakeholder is heard, and that the specific geographic, climatic and socio-economic conditions of every country are considered when charting a global roadmap to a climate-resilient future. We are keen to promote a just and inclusive transition to a sustainable way of life that truly leaves no one behind.<\/p>\n<p>COP28 is particularly important because it will provide a platform to present the results of the first global stocktake of the <a href=\"https:\/\/unfccc.int\/process-and-meetings\/the-paris-agreement\/nationally-determined-contributions-ndcs\/nationally-determined-contributions-ndcs\">Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs)<\/a> that aims to assess the world\u2019s progress in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. We plan to focus on advancing climate change adaptation, raising our collective climate ambition and stepping up global climate finance commitments.<\/p>\n<p><strong>EC: How is the UAE supporting other MENA countries to achieve their climate action <\/strong><strong>goals?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>MA: <\/strong>The UAE is keen on building regional synergies to devise a regional response model that caters to the challenges and requirements of its peers from this region to enhance climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts.<\/p>\n<p>The country is a premier convenor of regional climate action events, such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/joint-statement-from-the-united-arab-emirates-regional-climate-dialogue\/\">UAE<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/joint-statement-from-the-united-arab-emirates-regional-climate-dialogue\/\">Regional Climate Dialogue<\/a> with the participation of US Special Envoy for Climate John Kerry in 2021 and the first-ever <a href=\"https:\/\/unfccc.int\/MENA-CW2022\">MENA Climate Week<\/a>, held in collaboration with the <a href=\"https:\/\/unfccc.int\/\">UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)<\/a> in 2022 to boost the momentum of climate action and support a new low-carbon development path in the MENA region.<\/p>\n<p>Aiming to help countries in the region advance their energy transition, we have invested heavily in their renewables ventures, such as the four solar PV plants in Egypt\u2019s Red Sea Governorate with a combined capacity of 14 MW and the 117 MW Tafila Wind Farm in Jordan.<\/p>\n<p>We will go to COP27 eager to build on existing ties with other countries and forge new ones, because when we move together, we move faster.<\/p>\n<p><strong>EC: How much has the UAE spent so far on climate action projects and goals? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>MA: <\/strong>To date, we have invested over USD 40 bn in clean energy projects locally. As a result, our country is home to three of the largest-in-capacity and lowest-in-cost solar plants in the world, and our clean energy capacity is set to reach 14 GW by 2030.<\/p>\n<p>On the international front, the UAE supports green infrastructure and clean energy projects worldwide, and has invested around USD 16.8 bn in renewables ventures in 70 countries, with a focus on developing nations. Furthermore, we have contributed USD 1 bn in aid and soft loans to renewable energy projects in 50 countries.<\/p>\n<p>And this year, we have pledged to invest an additional USD 50 bn in clean energy ventures at home and abroad over the next decade. Here are five MENA climate-focused startups doing just that, by using innovation to address specific climate challenges.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1- <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shift-ev.com\/\">Shift EV<\/a><\/strong><strong>:<\/strong> <strong>Egyptian mobility startup working to accelerate the adoption of electric <\/strong><strong>vehicle (EV) batteries for commercial vehicles.<\/strong> Transport <a href=\"https:\/\/ourworldindata.org\/co2-emissions-from-transport\">accounts for<\/a> around one-fifth of global CO2 emissions and an estimated 29.4% of this comes from trucks carrying freight. <a href=\"https:\/\/thestartupscene.me\/INVESTMENTS\/Cairo-s-Shift-EV-Raises-Series-A-to-Convert-Cars-into-Electric\">Egypt alone<\/a> has over 1.5 mn commercial vehicles on its roads. Though EVs are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/07\/26\/lifetime-emissions-of-evs-are-lower-than-gasoline-cars-experts-say.html\">widely hailed<\/a> as a way to reduce this impact, they\u2019re also a lot more expensive than conventional vehicles. Electric mobility startup Shift EV is addressing this problem by retrofitting fleets with EV batteries and drive trains \u2014 at a fraction of the cost of buying a new vehicle.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How does it work? <\/strong>Shift EV converts conventional delivery fleets into EVs using proprietary, locally-manufactured batteries. The battery packages are made of Lego-like modules that can be combined in different sizes, form factors and voltages to make optimum use of the engine compartments in different vehicle models. This use of customizable batteries allows Shift EV to work at an industrial automotive rate, converting individual vehicles to EVs in less than a few hours and full delivery fleets in just days. The company currently retrofits minivans and tricycles with EV battery packages, and is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shift-ev.com\/Products\">set to add<\/a> pickup trucks \u201csoon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>How does it generate income? <\/strong>The company uses a subscription model, with no upfront charges. It offers logistics fleets the chance to save some 30% of operating costs, and then takes a piece of those savings.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Shift EV had closed a total of <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2022\/04\/07\/meet-aly-eltayeb-ceo-of-the-startup-that-wants-to-transform-our-streets-and-help-save-the-environment-in-the-process-68696\/\">USD 9 mn in funding<\/a><\/strong><strong> as of April 2022.<\/strong> At least part of this came from an undisclosed Series A round that was backed by existing investors Union Square Ventures, along with Algebra Ventures, Wamda, and first-time investor Oman Technology Fund (OTF).<\/p>\n<p><strong>2- <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.manhatuae.com\/about-us\">Manhat<\/a><\/strong><strong>: Solar-powered desalination in the UAE.<\/strong> Desalination is often hailed as an integral solution to our global water woes \u2014 but traditionally it\u2019s an expensive and <a href=\"https:\/\/alj.com\/en\/perspective\/fresh-water-fresh-ideas-can-renewable-energy-be-the-future-of-desalination\/\">energy-intensive process<\/a> that produces lots of CO2 emissions and sees polluting brine released back into our air and oceans. The UAE\u2019s Manhat wants to change things: The startup, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adsmehub.ae\/en\/explore\/post-details\/desalination-is-destroying-our-planet---deep-tech-startup-manhat-is-developing-a-sustainable-alternative#:~:text=The%20reason%20behind%20this%20governmental,to%20the%20water%20supply%20issue.\">founded in 2019<\/a>, has been making waves this year with its use of solar-powered water distillation technology to produce desalinated water for irrigation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How does it work?<\/strong> Manhat uses greenhouse-like floating structures that trap evaporated vapor from areas of open water (like the sea). As the vapor rises, it touches the cooler sides of the structures and forms water droplets. Once the water is collected, the idea is for it to be immediately used to irrigate crops on floating farms \u2014 though these have yet to be piloted.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Manhat has been attracting national and international recognition:<\/strong> Manhat recently received the European Commission-established water tech platform <a href=\"https:\/\/watereurope.eu\/events\/water-innovation-europe\/awards\/\">Water Europe Innovation 2022<\/a> SMEs award. It also was <a href=\"https:\/\/mystartupworld.com\/winners-for-tff-2022-mena-agri-food-tech-challenge-announced\/\">previously awarded<\/a> the Thought for Food 2022 Mena Agri-Food-Tech Challenge, which took place at the Food for Future summit \u2014 beating over 170 applicants from the region.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3- <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uvera.co\/\">Uvera<\/a><\/strong><strong>: Saudi smart food storage system prolonging the shelf life of fresh food. <\/strong>Globally \u2014 and in all income brackets \u2014 food waste is a huge problem, with clear ecological and economic consequences, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/wrap.org.uk\/FoodWasteIndex\">UNEP Food Waste Index Report 2021<\/a>. Founded in 2019, and <a href=\"https:\/\/innovation.kaust.edu.sa\/startups-to-watch-in-2021\/\">headquartered at<\/a> the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), biotech startup Uvera uses non-chemical techniques to store and prolong the shelf life of food.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How does it work? <\/strong>Uvera smart devices have a base unit that vacuum seals containers to extend the shelf life of food stored in the devices. But they also use UV-C light sterilization to kill viruses and bacteria, including covid, salmonella, E.coli and H1N1, helping to reduce food spoilage, explains founder Asrar Damdam (<a href=\"https:\/\/thespoon.tech\/ces-2022-uveras-smart-food-storage-uses-uvc-light-to-kill-bacteria\/\">watch, runtime: 01:36<\/a>). This can increase the shelf life of fresh food by up to 97%, when the device is used for only 30 seconds, adds Damdam. Uvera also has several mobile app features, including an online fridge inventory and food spoilage notifications.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Uvera is in the process of raising USD 3 mn in funding,<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbesmiddleeast.com\/lists\/30-under-30-2021\/asrar-damdam\/\">Forbes Middle East<\/a> noted when naming Damdam in its 30 Under 30 2021. The company made it to the top ten of the Thought for Food 2022 Mena Agri-Food-Tech Challenge, it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/feed\/update\/urn:li:activity:6912776489658675200\/\">noted several months ago<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4- <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.algebraintelligence.com\/products.html\">Algebra Intelligence<\/a><\/strong><strong>: Jordanian AI startup to monitor energy usage. <\/strong>An estimated 20% of all businesses\u2019 annual energy costs are wasted through the usage of inefficient equipment, <a href=\"https:\/\/harksys.com\/solutions\/energy-monitoring\/why-is-energy-monitoring-so-important\/#:~:text=Energy%20monitoring%20software%20provides%20vital,to%20effectively%20rectify%20the%20situation.\">according to<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carbontrust.com\/\">Carbon Trust<\/a>. Jordanian startup Algebra Intelligence uses machine learning to help end-users \u2014 whether homeowners or businesses \u2014 use their energy more efficiently and save on costs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How does it work? <\/strong>Algebra Intelligence has created a mobile app and web-based platform, <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.apple.com\/jo\/app\/taqtak\/id1567871162\">TaQTaK<\/a>, that allows clients to monitor their electricity consumption and energy usage from their solar PV systems, by providing data analytics on a real-time dashboard. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jordannews.jo\/Section-129\/Technology\/Algebra-Intelligence-Digitizing-the-energy-sector-in-Jordan-11090\">Features include<\/a> energy forecasting and predictive maintenance notifications. Using machine learning models and algorithms to analyze patterns in data sets, the system is able to forecast energy generation capacity and make predictions about energy demand. It can also identify defects in energy infrastructure, scheduling check-ups and improving long-term performance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Founded in 2020, the company closed a USD 310k pre-seed round in 2021<\/strong>, led by Oasis500. It <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbesmiddleeast.com\/lists\/10-sustainable-startups-in-the-middle-east\/\">was also named<\/a> one of Forbes\u2019 10 Sustainable Startups in MENA last year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5- <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cupmena.com\/\">Cupmena<\/a><\/strong><strong>: Egyptian agritech firm growing mushrooms from used coffee grounds. <\/strong>Where do used coffee grounds go? Turns out, they\u2019re usually dumped in landfills along with general waste, where they emit methane \u2014 a greenhouse gas with over 20 times the global warming capacity of CO2. Cupmena was founded in 2019 to make better use of coffee\u2019s fertilizer properties, and reduce harmful methane emissions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How does it work? <\/strong>Cupmena has developed a biotech system to cultivate organic mushrooms using spent coffee grounds as the main soil. The mushrooms themselves are then sold, and the used mushroom soil is converted into organic fertilizer.
